Warmia and Mazury
Warmia and Mazury, known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes, is a region in
northeastern Poland that delights with its rich nature and history. In fact, there are
over 2,000 lakes in this area, making it an ideal place for lovers of water sports
such as sailing or kayaking, as well as fishing.
Fishing traditions in Warmia and Mazury
In the past, fishermen mainly fished using nets, including traditional pots, which
allowed for effective catching of fish from shallow waters. Funnel-shaped traps
were also used for fishing, and in winter, fish were pulled out from under the ice
using seines. Today, commercial fishing is regulated, and great emphasis is placed
on the protection of aquatic ecosystems and sustainable fishing. Today, fishing is
not only a profession, but also a passion for thousands of anglers who come to the
Masurian lakes to try their hand at catching predators or peaceful species of fish.

Traditional Warmia and Mazury dishes
- Sękacz – a cone-shaped cake baked on a spit. This is one of the most
recognizable dishes of Warmia and Mazury, in which layers of dough are first
poured onto a spit, and then slowly baked on the fire. - Kiszka ziemniaczana – a type of dish prepared from grated potatoes, bacon,
onion, eggs and spices, which is baked in a gut or a form. It is a very filling and
tasty dish. - Fish soup – Warmia and Mazury is a region with numerous lakes, hence the
presence of fish in the diet. Fish soup can be prepared on the basis of trout, pike-
perch or eel, with the addition of vegetables, spices and herbs.




- Karp in jelly – a dish prepared from carp, which is cooked in broth with the
addition of vegetables, and then covered with jelly. - Herrings in Mazury style – in this version, herrings are marinated in vinegar,
onion, spices and oil, often served with potatoes. - Pierogi with various fillings – Warmia and Mazury, like many other regions of
Poland, are famous for pierogi, which can be stuffed with various fillings, e.g.
potatoes, meat, cabbage or berries. - Roasted pork knuckle – traditional pork knuckle, baked in the oven with spices,
served with cabbage and potatoes, is also a common choice in Masurian cuisine.
