The most interesting monuments and tourist attractions of the Kętrzyn district

• Wolf’s Lair

This is one of the most famous places in Poland associated with World War II. The Wolf’s Lair was Adolf Hitler’s main headquarters on the Eastern Front and was one of the most heavily guarded military complexes of the Third Reich. Hidden in the Masurian forests near the village of Gierłoż, the complex once consisted of around 200 buildings, including bunkers, barracks, and shelters. Today, the impressive ruins remain and leave a strong impression with their scale and austerity. It was here that the failed assassination attempt on Hitler by Claus von Stauffenberg took place in July 1944. Now open to visitors, the Wolf’s Lair features educational trails and information boards, making it a must-see spot in the region.

• Kętrzyn Castle

Built in the 14th century by the Teutonic Order, the castle is one of the most iconic historical monuments in the city of Kętrzyn. Located by the Guber River in the city center, the castle served administrative and defensive roles for centuries. Despite several reconstructions, it has retained many Gothic elements and its original layout. Today, it houses the Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum, where visitors can explore a rich collection of archaeological, ethnographic, and historical exhibits. These include old furniture, weapons, folk costumes, and everyday items. In summer, the castle courtyard comes to life with cultural events and concerts.

• St. George’s Basilica

This monumental Gothic church is not only a place of worship but also an architectural gem of the region. Built in the 14th century as a fortified church, it has undergone multiple reconstructions and has played a significant role in the spiritual and social life of Kętrzyn’s residents. The brick basilica is notable for its slender tower, which dominates the city skyline—you can climb it for a beautiful view of the surroundings. Inside, there are historic altars, polychrome decorations, and wooden elements from different eras. St. George’s Basilica is both a historical landmark and a meeting place that blends tradition with contemporary community life.
